About.Canaan AME Church was established by Rev. Samuel Morgan Davis many years ago; however, the month and date are unknown. The church began with a small family which grew into a great, modern organization. During the 1920’s Rev. D. L. Johnson, a teacher, was pastor. Following the tenure of Rev. Johnson, leadership was passed on to Rev. McClam. During this time, the church was destroyed by fire and relocated to Lane’s Highway. However, Canaan has stood the test of time, and was blessed with a productive group of ministers. They are as follows: Rev. Murray, Rev. Turner, Rev. Settlers, Rev. Bailey, Rev. Singleton, and Rev. Ackman. In the late 70’s, a new vision was seen and realized under the leadership of Rev. Huctington to relocate and build a new church. Rev. Oneal Miller followed and served as pastor. During this time, the new Canaan was built in 7 years. On the 4th Sunday in May, 1982, the members marched from the old Canaan to the new Canaan church. In the new Canaan, the church followed the leadership of Rev. E. J. Brown and subsequently, Rev. Wearing. However, before Rev. Wearings time ended as pastor, God called him home. Rev. Glannie Tisdale completed the conference year as pastor. The following are some of the ministers that gave spiritual guidance and direction, promoting the growth and development of Canaan; Rev. Glannie Tisdale, Rev. Mervin McBride, and Rev. JoAnn Howard, Rev. Samuel Dennis, and Rev. Alice Wright. Today, Canaan AME Church is pastored by Rev. Dr. Pamela Vereen, a native of the Pleasant Hill community in Hemingway, SC. All praises be to God for his faithfulness. See what the Lord has done! |
